About This Call
Kipaipai Workshops, in partnership with Joshua Tree Center for Photographic Arts, announces an artist residency in Joshua Tree, California. This residency is open to English speaking established photographic artists seeking immersion in the Mojave Desert. One artist will be chosen for a three week residency taking place in Fall 2023.
The residency offers one artist a respite from daily life and regular studio practice for introspection, research, conceptualizing, and creation of photo-based work about the Joshua tree and their fragile ecosystems. Artwork produced during and after the residency will be considered for the exhibition "Survival of the Joshua Tree" at the Museum of Art and History (MOAH) in Lancaster, CA opening September 2024. The artist will be housed in a private one bedroom home with additional studio room in North Joshua Tree, 4 miles from Joshua Tree Village and 10 miles from National Park entrance. A car is required. No children, pets, or smoking are permitted; vegetarian cooking only. WiFi is provided. Computer labs, printers and darkrooms are not provided. A modest honorarium may be provided depending on the proposed project. The artist-in-residence is responsible for their own travel expenses, food, materials and other expenses. Spouses or partners may join if relevant to studio practice.
Entry fee is $50. Applicants must submit an artist statement, statement of intent including residency plan and photo-based project description, 10-15 examples of previous photo-based work, preferred 3 week dates during Fall 2023, and answer application questions. The deadline for submission is March 1, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Three finalists will be selected for a Zoom interview the week of March 27, 2023. The winner will be notified by April 15, 2023.
