About This Call

The Kingston Sculpture Biennial (KSB) is seeking emerging or established artists and artist groups to show existing sculptures or create site-specific installations in various locations throughout Kingston, New York, 90 miles north of New York City. The biennial is an every-other-year event held in summer and fall seasons in exterior and some limited accessible interior locations. The 2015 Biennial will be on view August 1 through October 31. Unconventional and thought-provoking artwork is being sought, especially work that challenges traditional artistic practice. Artists in all stages of their career are encouraged to apply, and may submit two entries.

The themes for this year's Biennial include history, mapping, and community, with a special focus on the evolution and potential rebirth of Midtown Kingston. Large scale sculptures are especially encouraged as there are locations with major exposure suitable for that work. Most sculpture will be exhibited on Broadway and in the Rondout neighborhood, known for its restaurants, cafes, and entertainment venues. Three-dimensional work in any media is eligible, including installation, multiple media, and site-specific artwork. All artwork should be built to withstand the elements and public interaction, with very limited access to electricity and only limited interior locations available.

Works will be selected based on quality, design, durability, scale, suitability for outdoor environment, safety to the public, and stable mounting. Artists are responsible for transporting, installing, and removing their works, with some volunteer assistance provided by organizers. Theft and damage insurance is the artist's responsibility. Submissions must include an artist statement/bio (no more than 1000 characters), a project proposal (no more than 2000 characters), 3 images with descriptions, and a resume. Entry deadline is May 15, 2015 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Artists will be notified of acceptance by June 15, with installation scheduled for July 27-30.
