About This Call

King Soopers, a division of the Kroger Company, is commissioning one professional artist or artist team to create an indoor mural for a new King Soopers grocery store located at Stapleton in Denver at 10406 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The mural will be a welcoming feature displayed on a wall inside the store entrance as part of the Kroger Company's commitment to involving artists in beautifying new stores. The artwork should celebrate the spirit of the community and the unique identity of the neighborhood and surrounding area. The mural will be painted on panels of durable material that can be attached to the wall, measuring 19 feet wide by 9 feet high.

The artwork must incorporate references to the area's history, culture, or environment; engage and inspire the community; use durable materials requiring minimum maintenance; and be resistant to vandalism. This opportunity is open to professional visual artists living in the Denver metropolitan area with the ability to create an exemplary large-scale mural. All applicants must be legally eligible for employment in the U.S.A. under United States immigration laws.

The total project budget is $10,000, which includes all artist fees and the cost of mural design, fabrication, and installation, including insurance, transportation, and project coordination. Up to three finalists will be selected to prepare a design proposal and will each receive $250 for their proposal. Applications must include a current resume, five digital images of relevant work with annotations listing media, size, title, date, and brief description, and an artist statement not exceeding 1000 characters. Submissions are due by midnight MST on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. Finalist proposals are due February 23, 2017, and the commission will be awarded by March 13, 2017. The completed mural must be delivered for installation by June 14, 2017.
