About This Call
The City of Happy Valley is seeking qualifications from artists and artist teams to create a sculpture for a new roundabout at the intersection of King Road and 129th Avenue. The roundabout will serve a fire station, police station, and nearby neighborhoods while functioning as a transportation gateway between Happy Valley and Portland.
The King Road Roundabout will include a circle measuring approximately 20 feet in diameter for public art and ornamental landscaping. Submissions should present artist qualifications for creating such a sculpture rather than a finished design. Existing or past work is acceptable. Up to five finalists will be selected based on experience with public art projects, artistic merit, and how their work would enliven the project location. Selected finalists will receive a $1,500 stipend and approximately five weeks to develop a full proposal, with a maximum budget of $120,000.
Artwork should be locally-relevant and site-specific for outdoor installation. Finalists are encouraged to interpret one or more of the following: Happy Valley's racial and ethnic diversity, the local landscape and wildlife, or the community's public services. The sculpture should have immediate visual impact for motorists and passersby without requiring close inspection. Illuminated artworks and sculptures with water features will not be accepted. Submissions must include up to ten digital images of completed outdoor works or works made of materials suitable for outdoor spaces, along with descriptions of relevant project experience and interest in the project. Applications are due September 9, 2024. This opportunity is open to all artists residing in the United States or U.S. Territories.
