About This Call
The annual Secondary Art Symposium is a juried competition organized by the Kilgore College Visual Arts Programs for secondary school art teachers and their students. Internationally known artists, curators, and scholars have served as jurors selecting works for exhibition created by students from the region's participating high schools.
This competition is open to all high school seniors in the region, whether or not enrolled in a high school art class. School districts in the following counties are eligible: Anderson, Angelina, Bowie, Camp, Cass, Cherokee, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Marion, Nacogdoches, Panola, Rains, Rusk, Sabine, San Augustine, Shelby, Smith, Upshur, Van Zandt, and Wood. Each student must submit six (6) original works in any medium (2D and 3D welcome) for a non-refundable fee of $8. Images must be in JPG or JPEG format, not exceeding 1200 pixels on the longest side and under 5 MB file size. The submitted portfolios will be juried by the Kilgore College Visual Arts faculty: Larry Kitchen (Visual Arts Chairman), Carolyn Fox-Hearne (Visual Art Professor and Gallery Director), and Coy A. Lothrop (Visual Art and Graphic Design Professor).
Awards include the L'Louise Graham Award ($2,000 tuition scholarship), Jenne Velde Memorial Scholarship ($1,600 tuition scholarship), and eight Visual Arts Scholarships ranging from $800-$1,200. The top five portfolios will receive professional presentation portfolios. All ten winners will receive regional certificates of accomplishment and award medallions. Entry deadline is March 1, 2019. Notification of acceptance will be sent via email on March 8, 2019. Contact: Larry Kitchen at [email protected] or 903-983-8166.
