About This Call

The City of Kansas City, Missouri One Percent for Art program seeks to commission a professional visual artist or artist team to create public art for the New Single Terminal at Kansas City International Airport. The commission is for a hanging installation suspended from the roof and centered on the "popup" clerestory in Retail Node B, which will serve as a focal point and wayfinding marker for passengers. The B concourse retail node is ringed by retail and dining options, with two-thirds of all passengers arriving and departing from the B concourse.

The total budget for this commission is up to $500,000 (all inclusive), covering stipends, design fees, travel, fabrication, supplies, material costs, delivery, engineering approval, lighting materials, and installation. Professional visual artists or artist teams at least 18 years of age are eligible. As of October 22, 2020, eligibility has been expanded to international artists, with a recommendation that artists located outside the United States choose a U.S.-based fabricator. Full-time, permanent City of Kansas City, Missouri employees, project consultants, project contractors, and their employees and sub-contractors are ineligible.

Submission materials must be received by December 6, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. MST and include: a letter of interest (up to 1 page), resume/CV, a portfolio of relevant work (5-10 images, up to 6 audio files, and up to 6 video files, totaling 5-20 samples), and an image list with details such as title, year made, materials, dimensions, and budget. Selection will be based on excellence, relevant prior experience with similar scale projects and stakeholder coordination, appropriateness to site and project context, durability of materials and processes, and diversity, equity and inclusion considerations. Shortlisted artists will be notified by mid-January 2021.
