About This Call

The City of Kansas City, Missouri One Percent for Art program seeks to commission a professional visual artist or artist team to create a hanging installation to be suspended from the roof structure in The New Single Terminal at KCI airport. The installation will be located between the escalators and visible to passengers descending to the baggage claim hall. This double-height space spans both the departures and arrivals level and is visible from the check-in hall through a glass wall.

The budget for this commission is up to $700,000 (all inclusive), which includes stipends, design fees, travel, fabrication, supplies, material costs, delivery, approval by a Missouri-licensed engineer, lighting materials, installation, and other related costs. The project completion is estimated for Spring 2023. Professional visual artists or artist teams at least 18 years of age are eligible to apply. Demonstrated experience working with diverse community stakeholders is desired. Full-time, permanent City of Kansas City, Missouri employees, project consultants, project contractors, and their employees and sub-contractors are ineligible to apply. As of October 22, 2020, artist eligibility has been expanded to International; the Executive Committee recommends that artists located outside of the United States choose a U.S.-based fabricator.

Submission materials must be received by December 6, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. MST and include: a letter of interest (up to 1 page), resume/CV, a relevant body of work (up to 10 images and/or up to 6 each audio and video files), and an image list with details such as title, year made, materials, dimensions, and budget. The Selection Panel will evaluate submissions based on excellence, relevant prior experience, appropriateness to site and project, durability, and diversity, equity and inclusion. Shortlisted artists will be notified by mid-January 2021.
