About This Call
The City of Kansas City, Missouri One Percent for Art program seeks to commission professional visual artists to create wall-based works of art for Concourses A and B in the New Single Terminal at Kansas City International Airport. The public art should reflect the City's diverse demographics and welcome travelers of all backgrounds in an inclusive environment.
Wall-based/wall-mounted artworks may include traditionally framed drawings, paintings, photography, textiles, mosaic or tile wall hangings, mixed-media or assemblage, digital art displays, artwork utilizing electricity or digital components, and relief or wall-mounted sculptural works (under 4" depth). Pieces will be located on porcelain tile walls at the north and south ends of gate lounges in a zone five feet above the floor, three feet below the ceiling, and three feet horizontally from either end of the wall. The total artwork area may not exceed 4' h x 20' w x 4" d. Archival materials are required, including indelible inks, stable materials, UV-resistant plexiglass, and sealed topcoat, as installation will be exposed to natural light, air circulation, and high traffic. Frames with UV-resistant plexiglass, D-rings, and picture hangers must be supplied by the artist as part of the commission budget. The budget for each location is up to $20,000 (all inclusive, covering design, fabrication, supplies, material costs, insurance, framing, delivery, travel, etc.).
Eligibility is open to artists residing in Missouri counties of Bates, Buchanan, Caldwell, Cass, Clay, Clinton, Jackson, Johnson, Lafayette, Livingston, Platte and Ray and Kansas counties of Atchison, Douglas, Franklin, Jefferson, Johnson, Leavenworth, Miami, Shawnee and Wyandotte. Artists living outside these counties who can demonstrate significant ties to Kansas City and/or Kansas City International Airport are also eligible. Demonstrated experience working with diverse community stakeholders is desired. Full-time, permanent City of Kansas City, Missouri employees, project consultants, project contractors, and their employees and sub-contractors are ineligible. Submission materials include a Letter of Interest stating county of residency or ties to KCI/Kansas City, Resume/CV, images/video/audio of past work (minimum 5, maximum 20 total samples: 5-10 images, 0-5 audio files, 0-5 video files), and artwork proposal sketches with written description and budget.
