About This Call
The City of Kansas City, Missouri One Percent for Art program seeks to commission a professional visual artist or artist team to create a hanging installation suspended from the roof structure of the Check-In Hall at the New Single Terminal at KCI airport. The installation will be located within the hall at a scale commensurate with the space, which measures over 700 feet long, 90 feet wide, and 35 feet high. The hall features distinctive steel "Y" columns, terrazzo flooring, bronze-colored facade supports, natural hemlock wood ceilings, and a monumental wall of vein-cut Missouri limestone. All departing passengers pass through this hall on their way to security and departure gates, making it a major moment in the passenger experience and a "front door" for Kansas City.
The total public art budget for this location is up to $1,000,000 (US dollars), all inclusive. This budget includes stipends, design fees, travel, fabrication, supplies, material costs, delivery, approval by a Missouri-licensed engineer, lighting materials, and installation. Professional visual artists or artist teams at least 18 years of age are eligible. Demonstrated experience working with diverse community stakeholders is desired. Full-time, permanent City of Kansas City, Missouri employees, project consultants, project contractors, and their employees and sub-contractors are ineligible to apply. International artists are eligible; the Executive Committee recommends that artists located outside of the United States choose a U.S.-based fabricator.
Submission materials must be submitted by December 6, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. MST and include: a letter of interest (up to 1 page), resume/CV, a relevant body of work demonstrating conceptual, aesthetic, and technical mastery (up to 10 images and/or up to 6 each audio and video files), and an image list providing details such as title, year made, materials, dimensions, and budget. The Selection Panel will evaluate submissions based on excellence, relevant prior experience, appropriateness to site and project, durability, and diversity, equity and inclusion. Shortlisted artists will be notified by mid-January.
