About This Call

Kaiser Permanente is seeking professional visual artists to create a commissioned artwork for the five-story stairwell at the Kaiser Permanente Lone Tree Medical Offices, a 275,000 square foot multi-specialty medical center currently under construction west of the RTD Lincoln Station light rail, 1.5 miles north of I-25 and Lincoln.

The art site is the five-story stairwell located on the front (east side) of the building. The artwork will be attached to a brick terracotta surface covering the concrete elevator core. Artists may work with a variety of mediums including glass, metal, ceramic, clay, sound, and light. The artwork could hang from the ceiling between the hand railing and terracotta wall or be attached to the terracotta wall at various points from floor to floor. The purpose of the commission is to be aesthetically pleasing from the building exterior while encouraging members and staff to utilize the stairs as part of the prevention program. The project budget is $35,000, inclusive of all design, fabrication, transportation, delivery, installation, and related costs.

Applicants must be professional visual artists residing in Colorado with completion of at least two site-specific projects and experience working cooperatively with architects, engineers, and project personnel. Applicants must have experience in installation or the ability to oversee installation of commissioned artwork and be able to comply with project deadlines. Applications will be pre-screened for eligibility, then ranked according to selection criteria including the artist's ability to embody Kaiser Permanente's "thrive" message, aesthetic quality of past work, demonstrated ability to translate concepts into durable and safe materials compatible with permanent construction in a stairwell setting, and stated availability to execute and complete the artwork in a timely and professional manner. The three highest-ranked artists may be invited to develop conceptual design proposals. Applicants should submit six images; a simple design sketch is optional. Project schedule: Design proposals due August 2012, contract issued September 2012, design development and fabrication September 2012 – August 2013, installation August 2013.
