About This Call

The Joshua Tree National Park Artist-in-Residence program offers visual, performing, and literary artists opportunities to promote a deeper appreciation of the natural, cultural, and historic resources of Joshua Tree National Park and the deserts of Southern California. Selected artists are invited to stay for three weeks during either spring or fall months at the Lost Horse Cabin, located inside Joshua Tree National Park. No stipend is provided; artists are responsible for their own expenses including travel, meals, transportation, and insurance coverage.

The 600 sq. ft. Lost Horse Cabin is a rustic, self-sufficient, off-the-grid living space with an indoor studio area and panoramic views of the park. Artists may also utilize the outdoor patio work space and the park itself for project execution. Although conditions inside the cabin are relatively temperate, artists must be prepared for extreme outdoor conditions including high winds, low relative humidity, and temperatures ranging from 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the day to as low as 30 degrees at night. Visiting artists are subject to National Park Service regulations; permanent or temporary alterations or manipulations of the landscape are strictly prohibited. Artists will receive a volunteer pass for free park access during the residency and must arrange their own transportation to the remote cabin location. Due to space limitations, the residency is limited to one occupant at a time and cannot accommodate collaborators, companions, or pets.

A panel of prominent artists, arts professionals, community representatives, and National Park Service personnel will select finalists based on artistic merit, professional resume, Statement of Purpose, public presentation proposals, and relevance to the program mission. Artists must agree to present 3 programs during their residency, which may take place in the park or nearby community. The interpretation staff will coordinate outreach efforts, which may include hikes, informal talks, or working in public spaces. U.S. residency is required; international applicants cannot be accommodated due to visa requirements. Entry fee: $45.00. Application deadline: June 1, 2016.
