About This Call
The Joshua Tree National Park Artist-in-Residence program offers visual, performing, and literary artists opportunities to promote a deeper appreciation of the natural, cultural, and historic resources of Joshua Tree National Park and the deserts of Southern California.
Selected artists may propose to stay for 2-4 weeks during spring and fall months at the Lost Horse Cabin, located inside Joshua Tree National Park. The cabin is approximately 600 sq. ft., rustic, self-sufficient, and off-the-grid, with an indoor studio area and outdoor patio workspace. Artists may also utilize the park itself for project production. The residency is limited to one occupant at a time and cannot accommodate collaborators, companions, or pets. No stipend is provided; artists are responsible for their own expenses including travel, meals, transportation, and insurance coverage. Artists will be provided with a volunteer pass for free park access during the residency and must arrange their own transportation to the remote cabin location.
Artists must be prepared for extreme high desert conditions including high winds, low humidity, and temperatures ranging from 100°F during the day to 30°F at night. Permanent or temporary alterations or manipulations of the landscape are strictly prohibited under National Park Service regulations. Selection is based on artistic merit, professional resume, Statement of Purpose, public presentation proposal(s), and relevance to the program mission. A panel of prominent artists, arts professionals, community representatives, and National Park Service personnel will choose finalists. Entry fee: $35.00. Application deadline: June 1, 2015.
