About This Call

Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency (JTHAR) accepts artists at all stages of their careers working in all media, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, film, video, new media, installation, fiction and non-fiction writing, interdisciplinary, social practice and architecture. Musical submissions are not being accepted at this time. JTHAR fosters creativity through opportunities for exploring, experimenting, quiet reflection, engagement and cross-cultural exchange with the vibrant local artist community.

Three seven-week residency sessions are offered: May 6 - June 24, 2026; August 26 - October 14, 2026; and January 13 - March 3, 2027. Each artist receives their own house for living and working, with access to a large shared studio space divided by movable walls. Housing is located in the Highlands near the West Entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. All houses are equipped with AC, though summer months can be very hot in the high desert. Artists must provide their own transportation and have a vehicle during the residency stay.

Residency recipients receive a $1,500 scholarship to defer program costs including art supplies, transportation, and meals. Artists must attend the full seven-week program with no exceptions, and are required to donate one completed work to JTHAR. The program includes a mid-residency review with board members and an optional open studio exhibition at the JTHAR Ranch. Visitors are welcome for up to two nights, but family members, partners, or pets cannot be accommodated. Entry fee is $45, and all US and international artists 18 years or older are eligible.
