About This Call

Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency (JTHAR) invites artists at all stages of their careers working in all media—including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, film, video, new media, installation, fiction and non-fiction writing, interdisciplinary work, social practice, and architecture—to apply for seven-week residencies. The program fosters creativity through opportunities for exploring, experimenting, quiet reflection, engagement, and cross-cultural exchange with the local artist community.

Three residency sessions are offered: May 1 - June 19, 2024; August 21 - October 9, 2024; and January 15 - March 5, 2025. Residency recipients receive a $1,500 scholarship to cover art supplies, transportation, meals, and other costs. Each artist is assigned their own house for living and working, with access to a large dedicated studio space divided by movable walls. Housing is located in the Highlands near the West Entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. All houses are equipped with air conditioning. Artists must provide their own transportation and have a vehicle available during the residency stay. A vehicle is required during the residency.

Eligibility is open to US and international artists 18 years or older. Selection is based on portfolio merit and residency proposal, reviewed by JTHAR Board Members. Artists chosen must commit to attending the full six-week program with no exceptions. Residency terms include: donating one completed work to JTHAR, participating in a mid-residency review to discuss work-in-progress, and having the option to exhibit work in an open studio exhibition. Visitors are limited to two-night stays; family members, partners, and pets cannot be accommodated. Entry fee is $45. Contact [email protected] or 310-562-0511 with questions.
