About This Call
Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency (JTHAR) offers seven-week residencies for artists at all stages of their careers working in all media, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, film, video, new media, installation, fiction and non-fiction writing, interdisciplinary, social practice, and architecture. The program fosters creativity through opportunities for exploring, experimenting, quiet reflection, engagement, and cross-cultural exchange with the vibrant local artist community.
Residency sessions run: May 1 - June 19, 2023; June 26 - August 14, 2023; August 21 - October 9, 2023; and January 15 - March 4, 2024. The entry fee is $45.00. Residency recipients receive a $1,000 scholarship/stipend to cover art supplies, transportation, meals, and other costs. The Gothard Family Artist Scholarship awards an additional $1,200 stipend to a JTHAR residency recipient of African American heritage (visual artists only). Artists must be 21 years or older and are eligible regardless of US or international status. Selection is based on the merit of the artist's portfolio and residency proposal, reviewed by JTHAR Board Members.
The residency provides private studio space and living accommodations in the Highlands near the West Entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. Each artist is assigned their own house and may also use the dedicated JTHAR studio space. Artists must provide their own transportation and have a vehicle available during the residency. A vehicle is required and artists must be able to attend the full six-week program with no exceptions. Visitors are limited to two-night stays; family members, partners, and pets cannot be accommodated. Artists chosen for the residency must donate one completed work to JTHAR. A mid-residency review allows artists to share work-in-progress with board members. Artists have the option of an open studio exhibition or Zoom presentation for the final exhibition. Contact [email protected] or call/text 310-562-0511 for questions.
