About This Call
Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency (JTHAR) offers six-week residencies for artists at all stages of their careers working in all media, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, film, video, new media, installation, fiction and non-fiction writing, interdisciplinary work, social practice, and architecture. The program fosters creativity through opportunities for exploring, experimenting, quiet reflection, engagement, and cross-cultural exchange with the local artist community.
Residency sessions run: May 2 - June 13, 2022; June 27 - August 8, 2022; August 23 - October 3, 2022; October 10 - November 21, 2022; and January 23 - March 6, 2023. Selected artists receive a $1,000 scholarship/stipend to cover art supplies, transportation, meals, and other costs. Each artist is assigned private living quarters and studio space in the Highlands near the West Entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. All houses are equipped with air conditioning. Artists must provide their own transportation and have a vehicle available during their stay. The entry fee is $45.00.
Selection is based on the merit of the artist's portfolio and residency proposal, reviewed by JTHAR Board Members. Artists chosen must be able to attend the full six-week program with no exceptions. Requirements include donating one completed work to JTHAR, participating in a mid-residency review with board members, and optionally conducting a workshop or presenting work in a final open studio exhibition or Zoom presentation. Visitors are limited to two-night stays. All US and international artists 18 years or older are eligible. Submission deadline: January 10, 2022. Contact: [email protected] or 310-562-0511.
