About This Call

Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency (JTHAR) welcomes artists at all stages of their careers working in all media, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, film, video, new media, installation, fiction and non-fiction writing, interdisciplinary work, social practice, and architecture. The program fosters creativity through opportunities for exploring, experimenting, quiet reflection, engagement, and cross-cultural exchange with the local artist community.

JTHAR offers a seven-week group artist residency (April 27 - June 15, 2021) and six-week solo artist residencies (August 16 - September 27, 2021; October 11 - November 22, 2021; January 10 - February 21, 2022). All 2021 Spring Group Session recipients receive a $1,500 scholarship/stipend; six-week solo artist residency recipients receive $500 scholarships. Funds can be used towards art supplies, transportation, meals, and other costs. The residency provides private studio space and living accommodations. Each artist is assigned their own house and may work in the dedicated JTHAR studio or their assigned space. Some houses are located near the West Entrance of Joshua Tree National Park; others are in Flamingo Heights. All houses are equipped with AC or swamp coolers. Artists must provide their own transportation to and from the program and have a vehicle during their stay. Group residency participants must attend the full seven-week program with no exceptions.

Artists are selected by the JTHAR Board Members based on portfolio merit and residency proposal. Selected artists must donate one completed work to JTHAR. The program includes a mid-residency review where artists share work-in-progress with board members. The group residency culminates in an exhibition at Joshua Tree Art Gallery curated by the residents. Solo artists may have the option of an exhibition at the JTHAR studio. Optional workshops about artists' work for the local community are available. Entry fee: $40. Work sample requirements: up to 15 images, 2 audio files, and 3 video files (15 total samples maximum). International artists are eligible. Contact: [email protected] or 310-562-0511.
