About This Call
Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency (JTHAR) welcomes artists at all stages of their careers working in all media, including drawing, painting, photography, film, video, new media, installation, fiction and non-fiction writing, interdisciplinary, social practice, and architecture. The program fosters creativity through opportunities for exploring, experimenting, quiet reflection, engagement, and cross-cultural exchange with the vibrant local artist community.
The Spring Group Residency runs for seven weeks from April 23 to June 11, 2019. Additional six-week solo artist extension residencies are available: June 24 - August 5, 2019; August 19 - September 30, 2019; and January 20 - March 2, 2020. All artists selected for the Spring session will receive a $1,000 scholarship/stipend to cover art supplies, transportation, meals, and other program costs. The six-week solo extension program does not include scholarship awards. Selection is based on the merit of the artist's portfolio and residency proposal, reviewed by the Artist Residency Board.
The residency provides studio space and living accommodations. Each artist is assigned their own house for living and working, with the option to use the dedicated JTHAR shared studio space. Some houses are located near the West Entrance of Joshua Tree National Park; others are in Pipes Canyon and Flamingo Heights. All houses are equipped with air conditioning or swamp coolers. Artists must provide their own transportation to and from the program and maintain a vehicle during their stay. Spring residency participants must attend the full seven-week program with no exceptions. Visitors are limited to two-night stays. Artists are required to donate one completed work to JTHAR. The Spring residency culminates in an exhibition at Joshua Tree Art Gallery, which artists will curate. Entry fee: $40. Work samples may include up to 15 images, 2 audio files, and 3 videos (15 total samples maximum). International artists are eligible.
