About This Call
Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency offers two program options: a seven-week group artist residency from April 24 - June 12, 2018, and six-week solo artist extension residencies available from June 18, 2018 through April 2, 2019. Artists applying should specify in their proposal which program they are interested in and, if applying for the six-week program, which time period(s) they prefer.
The residency provides studio space and living accommodations, with each artist assigned their own house to live and work. Artists may also use the JTHAR dedicated studio, a large shared studio space divided by movable walls. Some houses are located near the West Entrance of Joshua Tree National Park, while others are in Pipes Canyon and Flamingo Heights. All houses are equipped with AC or swamp coolers. Artists chosen for the Spring residency will receive a $1,000 scholarship/stipend to cover art supplies, transportation, meals, and other program costs. The six-week solo artist extension program does not include scholarship awards.
Selection is based on the merit of the artist's portfolio and residency proposal, reviewed by the Artist Residency Board Members. Artists must provide their own transportation to and from the program and have a vehicle available during their stay. Spring residency participants must attend the full seven-week program with no exceptions. Visitors are limited to two-night stays, and the program cannot accommodate family members, partners, or pets. Artists are required to donate one completed work to JTHAR. The April 24 - June 12 residency culminates in an exhibition at Joshua Tree Art Gallery, curated by the participating artists. A mid-residency review allows artists to share work-in-progress with board members. Optional workshops about artists' work are available to the local community. Entry fee: $35.00. International artists are eligible.
