About This Call
The Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency is a seven-week program running May 23rd through July 11th, 2017. Visual artists must submit a minimum of five images; writers should submit a maximum of 20 pages. All applicants must submit a project proposal for the seven-week residency. Selection is based on the merit of the artist's portfolio and proposal. Selected artists will be announced on April 15th, 2017.
All chosen artists will receive a scholarship/stipend between $700-$1,000 to help cover program costs. The residency provides studio spaces and accommodations. Each artist is assigned their own house to live and work in for the duration of the program, with the option to use a large shared studio space with moveable walls. Some houses are located near the west entrance of Joshua Tree National Park; others are in Pipes Canyon and Flamingo Heights. Summer temperatures in the high desert can be very hot; all houses are equipped with cooling units.
Artists must provide their own transportation to and from the program and have access to a vehicle during the residency. Full attendance for all seven weeks is required with no exceptions. Visitors are welcome for up to a 2-night stay, but family members, partners, and pets cannot be accommodated. Selected artists must donate one complete work to the program and will be expected to conduct a workshop/presentation about their work to the Joshua Tree community during the 3rd or 4th week. A mid-residency review will be scheduled individually with each artist. The residency culminates in an exhibition at the Joshua Tree Art Gallery, which the artists will curate, with an opening reception.
Entry fee: $35.00. International artists are eligible. For questions, contact [email protected] or 760-366-3636.
