About This Call

The Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency is a seven-week program running May 26-July 14. Artists are selected by the JTHAR Board Members based on the merit of their work and residency proposal. Selected artists will be announced on April 15th.

All chosen artists receive a scholarship/stipend between $700-$1,000 to defer program costs, including art materials, transportation, and food. Each artist is assigned their own house for living and working, with the option to use a large shared studio space with moveable walls. Some houses are located near the west entrance of Joshua Tree National Park, others in Pipes Canyon and Flamingo Heights. Summer temperatures in the high desert are very hot; all houses are equipped with cooling units. A car is recommended for getting around during the residency, and artists must provide their own transportation to and from the program.

Residency expectations include donating one complete work to the program, conducting a workshop/presentation about their work to the Joshua Tree community (scheduled around the 3rd or 4th week), participating in a mid-residency review to discuss progress, and curating a final exhibition at the Joshua Tree Art Gallery with an opening reception. Entry fee is $35.00. Work samples may include up to 6 images, 2 audio files, and 2 video files (6 total samples maximum). International artists are eligible.
