About This Call

The Johnson County Public Art Commission and departments associated with Johnson County Health Services are seeking Artists or Artist Teams to collaborate with the Architect and Contractor to develop innovative, original art for the new Health Services Building to be constructed on the Sunset Campus in Olathe, KS. The county is constructing a new 150,000-square-foot facility to house select services and programs provided by Johnson County's Mental Health Department, Department of Health and Environment, and services to support the Department of Aging & Human Services Nutrition Program. The facility will replace the existing Olathe Mental Health facility at 1125 Spruce, Olathe, KS and the existing Olathe Health Services Building at 11875 S Sunset Drive, Olathe, KS. The Architect is Finkle Williams Architecture and McCown Gordon Construction is the Construction Manager.

One or more commissions may be selected for the project, pending the advice of the Artist Selection Panel and approval of the Public Art Commission. The selected Artist will have two contracts: the first for design and documentation under the Architect's contract, and the second for fabrication, construction, and installation under the Contractor's contract. Artists must carry General Liability insurance of $2,000,000 per occurrence and $4,000,000 aggregate, Workman's Compensation of $1,000,000, and Commercial Auto of $1,000,000.

Artists should submit a PDF document including a professional resume/CV (limit 3 pages), a letter of interest (limit 2 pages) outlining approach to public art development and sources of inspiration for this community health project, three references with current contact information, and up to five individual pieces of selected articles or catalogues. Additionally, submit fifteen clearly labeled digital images of related past artwork. Up to two movie clips with a maximum combined length of 3 minutes may accompany the images. There are no restrictions on medium type for submission. Visual concepts are required for evaluation; verbal concepts will not be considered. The opportunity is open to all professional Artists residing in the United States, including emerging Artists in collaboration with other professional Artists. The Artist Selection Panel will review submissions based on past experience and success, capacity and resources to achieve success, overall approach to the project and site, excellence in past public artwork, and maintenance considerations for permanent installations.
