About This Call
The City of West Sacramento is seeking permanent public art to be installed in the new Joseph (Joey) Lopes Park, a 4-acre site located in the heart of West Sacramento parallel to Sycamore Avenue, from West Capitol Avenue on the north to Evergreen Avenue and US 50 on the south. The park was named after Joseph Lopes, an accomplished athlete and community steward who represented the United States in the 1948 Summer Olympics and was inducted into the California Boxers Hall of Fame in 1975. Artists are encouraged to create designs that honor this West Sacramento legend, the sport of boxing, and the community.
Artwork must consider the design and architecture of the site, take into account the scale and spatial and aesthetic properties of the surrounding park, encourage interactivity and/or functionality, and evoke Joey Lopes and/or the sport of boxing. Artwork deemed unsafe and/or fragile will not be eligible. The budget of $70,000 is available for all related expenses including artist fees, fabrication, insurance, shipping, travel, installation, documentation, and other costs. The City intends to purchase one exterior piece. The Art Selection Panel will select up to three finalists, each paid $1,000 to develop a design proposal. One artist or artist team will be commissioned based on the finalists' submissions.
Submissions must include standard contact information, a current resume (three pages maximum), a one-page letter of interest describing your design concept and approach to the project, and four images of past work (teams may submit up to six images). Applicants must also submit a minimum of four and maximum of eight total work samples, which may include up to one audio file and one video file. The City of West Sacramento is located in Yolo County in California's Central Valley and was named the Most Livable City in America in 2014 by the United States Conference of Mayors for cities with 100,000 or less population. The project is funded through the State Parks Bond Act (Proposition 84).
