About This Call
The City of Lauderhill, Florida is seeking to commission an artist or artist team to create a canopy for James D. Bradley Park located at 3100 NW 16th St, Lauderhill, FL 33311. The canopy must seamlessly mesh with an artist-designed painted and mosaic tile amphitheater wall mural, provide shade and lighting, and be memorable. All artwork styles will be considered. The artwork should reflect the spirit of Lauderhill and be impactful. The wall dimensions are 20 feet width x 12 feet height.
Three artists will be selected as semi-finalists to develop and present design proposals. The winning artist(s) will be awarded a $75,000 contract and will be responsible for the creation and installation of the final work, including engineering sealed shop drawings following Florida building code, all electrical wiring, and labor. An honorarium of $1,000 will be given to semi-finalists who complete a finished design. The total budget of $75,000 includes all costs such as research, design, materials, permitting, fabrication, installation, photography, insurance, travel, sales taxes, labor, and transportation. The canopy must include lighting and shade and must meet South Florida Building Codes and withstand hurricane force winds.
The project is open to all professional visual artists or artist teams in the United States with experience implementing work in the public realm with government agencies. Artists must be able to effectively work within the project timeline and collaborate with City Staff and the Public Art Committee. Submissions must include 6-10 images of past projects, current resume, and brief letter of interest. The application deadline is Thursday, June 21, 2018. Anticipated timeline: Shortlisting July 2018, Semi-finalists proposals due August 2018, Notification September 2018, City Commission Approval September 2018, Artwork Permitting/Installation February 2019.
