About This Call

Bencor is seeking an artist or artist team living in the United States to create and install a site-specific wall sculpture/artwork for the pedestrian space in their new Walgreens retail location in Jackson Hole. The primary artwork location is on a wall adjacent to the second set of steps on West Broadway, with dimensions of 7' tall x 17.5' long. The wall is constructed of natural/unfinished steel H pilings with 8"x8" wood timber slates and is primarily south-facing.

A successful proposal will address the following project goals: artwork that promotes a healthy lifestyle and its connection to personal happiness; artwork that activates and inspires activity in the pedestrian area and creates a sense of community place; artwork that connects to the unique setting and people of Jackson Hole; artwork that reflects on the origins of modern medicines or the history of the pharmacy as a community-gathering place; and artwork that embodies Walgreens' philosophy of pioneering innovation and creating positive customer interaction. The artwork must be made of durable, permanent media that is safe and requires little to no maintenance. Materials should be colorfast, fade-resistant, and appropriate for harsh winter conditions. Experience creating installations for public space is required due to the condensed timeline. The artist will be responsible for submitting technical drawings approved by a structural engineer and for installation of the artwork, including hiring professional installers and equipment as needed.

The selection process occurs in two phases. In phase one, the selection panel will assess applicants based on previous projects of similar scale and scope, and their written project statement. One to three finalists will be selected to develop a conceptual proposal in phase two. Finalists will receive a $625 stipend for conceptual development and will be evaluated based on creativity, potential to create a well-integrated solution within the condensed timeline, and willingness to work with the selection panel. The selected artist will participate in a design development cycle and communicate directly with the public art coordinator, with access to the architect and general contractor.
