About This Call

Jackson Hole Airport, located within Grand Teton National Park, is the only commercial airport in the United States situated within a national park. The airport serves more than 300,000 travelers annually and is located seven miles north of downtown Jackson Hole, with views of the Teton Range and Sleeping Indian mountain.

The Jackson Hole Airport Board seeks an artist or artist team to create an original artwork for the roundabout at the airport entrance. The roundabout is approximately 72 feet wide with a circumference of 266 feet, with walls currently 18 inches high. The artwork should rise at least 6 feet above the roundabout and be visible from a distance as visitors arrive and leave the terminal. The sculpture will serve as a prominent welcoming feature and should conceptually recognize Wyoming's significant support of the airport. The design should respond to themes expressed in Wyoming's logo (a bucking horse and cowboy), celebrate Wyoming's rugged spirit of individualism and ranching heritage, and create a memorable first impression that complements the natural beauty of the area. The artwork must be made of durable, permanent media that is safe and requires little to no maintenance. If the sculpture represents realistic subject matter, it should be 1 to 1.5 times life size. Artists should account for extreme weather conditions including persistent winds, strong sun, and long winters with over 6 feet of snow annually.

Artists living within the United States are invited to apply, including artist teams. Artists living and working in Wyoming may be given preference. Applicants must demonstrate success working on projects of similar scale and budget, provide current references, and show a history of excellence and precision in their selected materials. The selection process proceeds in three phases: Phase 1 assesses artist qualifications based on previous projects, written project statements, and suitability for the site; one to three finalists will be selected. Phase 2 finalists receive a $1,500 stipend to tour the site, meet with the art committee, and submit a site-specific conceptual design. Work sample requirements: 6 images.
