About This Call

It's About the Hustle is a juried exhibition hosted by Artspace, a non-profit gallery located at 2833-A Hathaway Rd., Richmond, VA 23225. The exhibition explores the stories of African Americans and their labors in the United States, examining work in its vast iterations as central to Black history and culture. The exhibition will feature pieces exploring the intersectional history of creativity, ingenuity, and innovation that has supported Black communities' resilience, depicting accounts of victories and struggles for social and economic justice, higher education opportunities, individual expression in sports, fine arts, fashion and entertainment, as well as building and maintaining family. Narratives of survival and thriving, of feeling whole and of simply being are central to the exhibition.

The exhibition is open to artists 18 years and above. Submissions are open to artwork in all genres, 2D and 3D, with artwork creation dates of 2021 or later. Entries must include 1 to 3 images and an artist statement. For video entries, artists must provide display equipment if work is selected. All work must be able to fit through the gallery door (33 inches width by 82 3/4 inches height with a diagonal of 88 inches). The entry fee is $35 (non-refundable). Submissions deadline is December 11, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Estimated notification of acceptance is December 20, 2024. The exhibition runs January 24 - February 22, 2025, with an opening reception and awards presentation on January 24 at 6:00 - 8:00pm and a juror talk at 6:30pm.

Prizes include 1st Place: $300 plus a solo exhibition at Artspace; 2nd Place: $200; 3rd Place: $100. Up to three honorable mentions may be awarded at the juror's discretion. The juror is Franchell Mack Brown. Accepted work must be received January 15 - 18, 2025 (gallery hours noon to 4pm). Installation is January 21-23. Work pickup is February 22, 4:00 - 6:00pm or February 23, noon - 2:00pm. Shipped work must be returned by March 14.
