About This Call
The Gadsden Museum of Art announces a juried Call for Entries in coordination with Jacksonville State University as part of a research and thesis topic. Between March 10, 2017, and May 1, 2017, artists and designers are invited to submit work utilizing irony in 2-D and 3-D design to be displayed during the run of the exhibition. Submissions may also be included and credited in the thesis research document associated with the exhibition.
From MFA candidate Blake Dodgen: "Irony is a literary device often associated with sarcasm or satire. It can be a successful design element when properly utilized that adds dimension and longevity to what could otherwise be a simple or boring design. While commonly used, its use does not appear often in design literature. I want to explore and expand upon the conversation of ironic design in part through the curation of this exhibit to further develop the lacking literature ironic design."
Proposals must be submitted by May 1, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Accepted work must be mailed no later than May 10, 2017 or delivered in person no later than May 15. Proposals must include the artist's full name and contact information, a brief description of the proposed artwork including dimensions, media/materials, and technical specifications, a statement explaining the work's relationship to the theme of Ironic Design (maximum 500 words), and images of the proposed artwork or representative samples (maximum 5 images in JPG, PNG, or PDF format). Submissions will be reviewed by a selection committee of the Gadsden Museum of Art including MFA candidate Blake Dodgen. Accepted entries will be notified no later than May 3, 2017. Artists and designers are responsible for all transportation of works. A Best of Show award of $200 will be given. Entry fee is $25.00. National eligibility.
