About This Call

The City of San Jose Office of Cultural Affairs' Public Art Program and the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department are seeking an artist to create a public art project for Iris Chang Park, a new 2.61 acre park being developed as part of a multi-family residential housing project. This opportunity is open to individual artists or artist-led teams working or living in California. If submitting as a team, a professional artist with public art experience must be the lead team member. All applicants must have all necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States at the time of submittal.

Iris Chang Park is located in north San Jose between the Guadalupe River and Coyote Creek. The park was named in honor of Iris Chang, a leading historian and San Jose resident known for her research on Asian and Asian-American history. Public art will be a key element of the park, enhancing the experience of area residents and visitors. The opportunity includes development of stand-alone artwork as well as collaboration with landscape architects on site design, material selection, and creative contributions to the base project's enhancement. While not specifically a memorial, the memory of Iris Chang shall inspire the design.

The selected artist or artist team is expected to design, fabricate, and install the public art within the given project budget of $100,000. The design process includes background research, concept proposal development, schematic design, and design development with construction documentation. The artist must work closely with landscape architects, participate in community stakeholder meetings, present designs to the San Jose Public Art Committee for review and approval, and coordinate with the project team throughout design and pre-construction phases. Work sample requirements: 6-8 images.
