About This Call

The Louisiana Art & Science Museum is accepting submissions from artists of all styles and mediums for Iridescence: Juried Competition, a competition spotlighting the use of iridescent materials, principles, and techniques in the creation of fine art. Iridescence, the phenomenon of color shifting as the angle of view or illumination changes, is found in nature in soap bubbles, bird feathers, butterfly wings, gemstones, seashells, and fish and snake scales, as well as in human-made objects like color-shifting clothes, automotive paints, and cell phones. Winning submissions will be featured in an online exhibition, and a select number of top works will be included in an in-person exhibition at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum.

The competition will be held in collaboration with Iridescence, an exhibition of contemporary works by artist-scientists created in partnership with Dr. Nathan Lord, Assistant Professor in the Department of Entomology and Director of the Louisiana State Arthropod Museum at Louisiana State University. The juror is Bradley Sumrall, Curator of the Collection at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. All artists over the age of 18, regardless of geographic location, are eligible to submit. Artists may submit up to three works; additional images beyond three will be charged at $10 per image with a maximum of 10 images total. Each application requires a non-refundable $35 processing fee plus a $10 media fee.

Submission deadline is June 25, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Artists will be notified by July 9, 2021. Accepted works must be delivered to the Louisiana Art & Science Museum (100 South River Road, Baton Rouge, LA 70802) by 5 p.m. on July 23, 2021. The exhibition runs from August 7, 2021 through July 31, 2022. Two-dimensional works must be framed or gallery wrapped and ready for professional gallery display with appropriate hanging hardware. Three-dimensional works must be ready for gallery installation. Shipping and insurance during transit are the artist's responsibility. Works will be insured for full declared value while on the museum's premises. Artwork pickup is available after March 30, 2022; a storage fee of $10 per day applies for any work left after August 30, 2022.
