About This Call
MidPen Housing is seeking a Bay Area artist or artist team to create an original mural for Ira D. Hall Square, a 176-unit affordable housing development in Sunnyvale. The mural should pay homage to the legacy of Ira D. Hall, the building's namesake and co-founder of MidPen Housing, who was a lifelong advocate for social justice and racial equity. Rather than traditional illustration or documentation, the artist should interpret Hall's legacy through imagery, drawing on his life of public service, varied careers, and deep interest in art.
The artwork spans two floors of the building's east façade, measuring 33 feet wide by 18 feet high, and is visible from the street for cars and pedestrians. The two-floor mural will be visually connected but separated by a concrete floor between levels 1 and 2. The space is enclosed in glass with 3'-8" distance between the mural wall and window, dedicated to art installation and maintenance access. Artists may work in a range of media, including traditional paint, tile, digital, or sculptural elements. The selected artist(s) will receive image archives, information about Mr. Hall, access to surviving family members, and details about his role as MidPen Housing co-founder. The artist will collaborate with MidPen Housing development and an art consultant in a limited design review to ensure alignment with the project vision and Hall's legacy.
Eligibility is limited to Bay Area artists with a connection to the region; artists from other areas are not eligible. Applicants must submit a portfolio of 6-12 images of past work with dimensions, media, location, and commission details; a statement of interest explaining what draws them to the project; and an artist bio or resume (one page maximum) discussing their artistic journey and Bay Area connection. The top two finalists will be invited to submit proposals and will each receive a $1,000 honorarium. The project is scheduled for completion in Fall 2025. Application deadline: April 11, 2025 at 5:00 PM PST.
