About This Call

San Gabriel Storage Owner, LLC is inviting professional Artists or Artist Teams to submit proposals for an original, permanent work of public art at 414 S. San Gabriel Boulevard in San Gabriel, CA. The selected artist will receive an honorarium of $1,000 for proposal submission, and the winning artist will be awarded between $45,000 and $60,000 to refine their design into a complete project plan and execute the artwork, including all materials, travel, and costs for specialized team support. An additional 10% bonus will be awarded for early completion, with a final deadline of August 22, 2024.

Site 1 is located at the Artists & Makers Studios complex, a multi-use development featuring artist studios and climate-controlled storage. The artwork should enhance the sense of place, connect the studios with the surrounding neighborhood, and communicate the richness artists bring to the San Gabriel community. The work may be freestanding or attached to the structure; it may be ornamental or functional (such as seating or shade canopy). Artwork must be highly durable, sustainable, and low maintenance, with demonstrated UV protection, structural soundness, resistance to vandalism, and fire resistance. Water features are not permitted. The artwork will be subject to approval by the City's Design Review Commission and must not include logos, copyrighted images, or promotional content.

This opportunity is for artists and artist teams with experience designing and fabricating large-scale outdoor public art. The schedule is tight, and artists must provide all tools, equipment, insurance, technology, knowledge, and labor necessary for execution. Proposals should include a draft schedule for completion and commitment to the $45,000-$60,000 budget. The selection panel will judge based on artistic excellence, suitability for the site, and feasibility. The proposal deadline is October 13, 2023. For questions, contact Project Curator Robin Moore at [email protected].
