About This Call

Niaulani Sculpture Garden invites professional, amateur artists, and university students eighteen (18) years or older to submit original works that address conceptually and visually the intersection of art and science. Artists may submit up to three (3) original works. Each submission must include a didactic or artist statement that may be edited by Volcano Art Center for promotion and educational purposes. The entry fee is $20 for up to 3 works.

The outdoor sculpture exhibition runs from April 28, 2019 through December 31, 2020 at the Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. Works must be created from materials appropriate to withstand prolonged exposure to the rainforest environment for 15 months. Young Brothers will provide free shipping for up to five (5) works selected for the Hawaii island exhibition; artists are responsible for packing artwork on pallet and delivery to Young Bros. Artists will be responsible for arranging return transportation. Volcano Art Center will provide construction of sculpture foundations, assistance with installation, and help securing sculptures to bases as instructed by the artist. The center will also provide press releases, radio spots, and educational materials, as well as assistance with uninstallation. Volcano Art Center retains a 30% commission on sales.

Submissions will be reviewed digitally by a Selection Committee chaired by Professor Michael D. Marshall. The committee will evaluate submissions based on strength of concept, form, and determination of durability. Applicants must submit a Technical Data Sheet with detailed written summary of performance characteristics for all key elements and components. Selected artists must sign a waiver of liability and Purchase of Service Contract, and will be required to work with a VAC installer on location to direct attachment of foundation and sculpture security hardware. Each artist will be invited to speak about their process or provide a workshop during the exhibition. Jury notification is January 15, 2019. Deadline for delivery of accepted work to Niaulani Campus is April 15, 2019, with installation deadline April 21, 2019. Opening and Artist Reception is April 28, 2019. For additional information, contact Julia Williams at [email protected] or 808-339-1699.
