About This Call

International call for qualified artists and teams to design and create permanent public civic art monument sculptures incorporating fountain features for two traffic circles at Segovia Street in downtown Coral Gables, Florida. The artworks will be located within recently completed traffic circles serving as a major gateway to downtown, with more than 22,000 visitors experiencing the art daily.

Eligibility: This commission is open internationally to all qualified artists and is not limited to Florida artists. Qualified artists must have at least five years of demonstrated professional art experience with outdoor public art and/or civic art, experience with design and fabrication of fountains, and must have completed a project of at least $200,000 or greater. A qualified artist is recognized by critics and peers as a professional practitioner of the visual arts and/or civic design, as judged by the quality of their body of work, MFA or equivalent, experience, past public commissions, exhibition record, publications, receipt of honors and awards, training in the arts, and production of artwork. Teams may include sculptors, designers, gallerists, architects, engineers, and other design professionals with focus on civic design and aesthetics.

Project Details: Total budget is $1,040,000, including all costs such as concept fees, travel, materials, fabrication, transportation, insurance, installation, and engineering. The two traffic circles have the following dimensions: Biltmore Way/Segovia (5,899 sf) and Coral Way/Segovia (7,012 sf), with 432 feet distance between center lines. The surface within 5 feet of the curb must be constructed of structural material suitable for vehicle loads, and no structures may be placed within 10 feet from the curb. Artists should consider the natural world, entry to downtown, community themes, relationship to surrounding buildings and historic civic art, South Florida weather conditions, and applicable laws and codes. Submissions must include 3-6 images of original completed work. Entry deadline: August 23, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Contact: [email protected]
