About This Call

The City of Sunrise, Florida is seeking to commission an artist or artist team to create an interactive sculpture inspired by the historic 1960s "Upside-Down House," a marketing landmark that promoted Sunrise Golf Village and attracted thousands of home buyers to the area. The sculpture will be located in the Village Art Plaza at 2260 NW 68 Avenue, Sunrise, currently under construction with an estimated completion in February 2024.

The sculpture must be interactive, allowing spectators to walk through, over, or under it, or inviting them to become part of the artwork. It should be inspired by the Upside-Down House but does not need to be a replica. The sculpture must be durable and require minimal maintenance, designed to withstand South Florida's subtropical climate with intense sun and seasonal heavy rain. It must comply with the Florida Building Code and be tall and wide enough to be impactful. The City prefers sculptures that are unique, stand out day and night (with potential interior lighting), have no water features, and are interactive. A 16-foot diameter concrete art pad with electricity will be provided by the City.

The selection process will occur in two phases. In phase one, up to three artists or artist teams will be shortlisted based on experience, credentials, style, and previous work. In phase two, each shortlisted artist or team will receive a $1,500 stipend to develop a detailed proposal with conceptual design options. The selected artist or team will enter into an agreement with the City for the sculpture in an amount not to exceed $145,000, which covers all costs including research, design, materials, permitting, fabrication, installation, photography, insurance, travel, sales taxes, lighting design, labor, structural engineering, and transportation. The application is open to professional artists nationwide with experience working with public agencies and professional engineers.
