About This Call

The City of Coral Springs Public Art Committee is commissioning an artist or artist team to create an interactive sculpture for the NW 31st Court ArtWalk. The sculpture must be significant in size, interactive in nature (allowing spectators to walk in, on, and around it or become part of the artwork itself), and family-oriented. Kinetic sculptures are not eligible. The artwork should be iconic, create photo opportunities, and represent Coral Springs as a young, family-oriented community.

The sculpture must be durable with minimal maintenance requirements, resistant to South Florida's subtropical climate (heat, humidity, intense sun, seasonal heavy rains, and high-speed winds), and self-supporting on an open landscape or hardscape. The installation site is a 10-foot diameter pad with electric service. The Downtown ArtWalk is approximately 1,300 linear feet along NW 31st Court and currently features three permanent sculptures. The area hosts special events including Artoberfest, Downtown in December, Unplugged, a Farmers' Market, and Savor the Notes jazz brunch.

The selection process occurs in two rounds. Round 1 applicants must submit 5-8 images of their work. The jury will shortlist three finalists, each receiving a $1,000 honorarium. Shortlisted artists must submit detailed design documentation including a 3D model with scaled plans, dimensioned elevations, perspectives, materials information, site plan with pedestrian access details, and an itemized project budget. Selection criteria include artistic merit, style appropriateness to the community, technical feasibility, safety and maintenance considerations, and diversity of artistic approaches. Total project budget is $100,000, with $97,000 allocated for the selected artist. Artists who are immediate family or business partners of Public Art Committee members or program staff are ineligible. Event dates: August 17, 2017 - November 1, 2017.
