About This Call

Ink & Clay 45: The Art of Type is the 45th Sapphire Anniversary edition of an annual juried competition established in 1971. The competition is open to artists working throughout the United States and accepts work in printmaking, ink drawing, ceramic ware, clay sculpture, mixed media, installation, and any combination utilizing ink or clay as material. For this year's theme, all submissions must incorporate type, text, phrases, writings, script, words, letters, letterforms, and/or symbols in some way, shape, or form, in addition to featuring ink and/or clay in the creative process.

Artwork must have been completed within the last three years (2018-2021) and cannot have been submitted in prior years. Original work created by the artist's hand is required; giclée prints, reproductions, and solely digitally-based prints are not acceptable. All traditional media, mixed media, collage, assemblage, book-making, installation, video, and avant-garde artforms are acceptable as long as ink and/or clay are featured. There are no size restrictions. The entry fee is $45 for up to three entries, paid by credit card through the CaFÉ platform. The submission deadline is May 30, 2021.

The Kellogg University Art Gallery is offering $7,000 in cash awards, including the James H. Jones Memorial Purchase Award, University President's Purchase Award, Jurors' Choice, and Director's Choice Purchase Awards, plus additional monetary awards and Honorable Mentions totaling up to $2,500. All artwork will be considered for sale unless marked NFS (not for sale); the gallery retains a 25% commission on sales. Due to COVID-19 pandemic limitations, the 2021 exhibition will be virtual, with the physical exhibition moved to Fall 2022. The exhibition will be documented through an online printable catalog.
