About This Call

The Initiative for Public Art – Reston (IPAR) and the Reston Association Multimodal Transportation Advisory Committee (MTAC) are seeking design proposals for permanent, artist-designed outdoor functional bike racks to be installed at specific locations throughout Reston. Up to five artistic design proposals will be selected. The goals of the project are to provide safe bike parking for cyclists throughout Reston and to weave art into the fabric of Reston's infrastructure.

Bike rack designs will be selected for the following locations: Walker Nature Center, Lake House (Tetra Building), Pony Barn Recreation Area, and Hunters Woods Village Center. Artists can submit a maximum of two design proposals per site. The design must be both utilitarian and artistic, complementing or reflecting the character of the area and referring to, symbolizing or suggesting elements related to the site. Designs may not be advertisements for specific businesses, agencies or individuals, and no logos are permitted.

Designs must meet Fairfax County design guidelines for bike racks, including accommodating at least three bicycles upright by frame, enabling frame and wheel security with a standard u-lock, being securely anchored to the ground, supporting bicycles in at least two places, providing multiple locking points between 1' and 3' off the ground, and accommodating a variety of bicycle types and sizes. The design must adhere to ADA standards for protrusions and be constructed of at least 14-gauge powder-coated steel or similar material. Selected artists will receive $1,000 for their design concept and will be expected to work with the panel and fabricator to refine the design, attend a community engagement activity, and attend the unveiling. Copyright of the design will be assigned to the property owner. This opportunity is open to professional artists and artist teams residing in the Greater DC Metro region, including Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Submissions must be received via online entry at www.callforentry.org by May 29, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
