About This Call
The Initiative for Public Art – Reston (IPAR), in partnership with the Hyatt Regency Reston Hotel, the Reston Town Center Association (RTCA), and Reston Community Center (RCC), seeks an artist to develop a site-specific artwork in a permanent medium for Hyatt Park. The park is located east of Market Street, between Reston Parkway and Presidents Street, across from the Hyatt Regency Reston Hotel. The circular concrete platform at Hyatt Park measures 10 feet in diameter and is located near Presidents Street facing the hotel entrance.
The artwork must be a permanent installation constructed of high-quality, durable materials that require little or no maintenance and can withstand outdoor exposure to sun and wind. The artwork will be viewed from all angles and should be safe for public interaction, especially with children. It should celebrate creativity, establish a sense of place, and have connection to the site and architectural elements of Reston Town Center. The artwork cannot interfere with pedestrian movement, safety, or security, and must be designed so graffiti can be cleaned with appropriate chemical removers or sandblasting.
Eligibility is limited to established professional artists living in the metropolitan Washington, DC area. The selected artist will receive a commission of $65,000.00, inclusive of all expenses for design, labor, materials, tools, contracted services, operations, and travel. The artist will be required to provide detailed maintenance instructions and will give presentations and workshops to the community and schoolchildren through the RCC's artist residency program. Applicants should have specific skills in designing, fabricating, and installing public artwork, and experience working within public processes and with community stakeholders.
