About This Call

The Indianapolis Airport Authority invites artists to submit proposals to temporarily install a work of art at the New Indianapolis Airport. This opportunity is for one free-standing work of art to remain on display in one of two sites in the North Terminal Garden for two years. The artwork must fit within established engineering guidelines for the selected site, be durable, be impervious to weather (unless natural weathering is essential to the concept), be low-maintenance, and be suitable in form, material and content for a mixed-ages audience including young children.

Artists must be at least 18 years of age and reside in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, Wisconsin or Missouri. Artists must have, or be willing to obtain, at least $2M of general liability and damage insurance covering the artwork during transportation, installation and deinstallation. The selected artist will receive a fee of $5,000 for the two-year loan period, paid in two installments, plus reimbursement for up to $5,000 in direct expenses related to transportation, installation and deinstallation. The IAA will provide appropriate equipment and personnel as available to decrease installation costs. This is not a commissioning opportunity; artists must submit previously completed or currently in-process artwork.

Artwork may incorporate any medium sufficiently sturdy for two years of outdoor exhibition, low-maintenance and safe for the public. Site 1 specifications: base within 48" square, height 17'-0" or less, projected area 102 s.f. or less, weight 22,000 lbs or less with center of gravity 8'-0" or less. Site 2 specifications: base within 60" square, height 20'-0" or less, projected area 160 s.f. or less, weight 50,000 lbs or less with center of gravity 10'-0" or less. Artwork must not depict nude human figures, sexually suggestive imagery, terrorism, blood, gore, aviation accidents, or other images that could negatively reflect on air travel safety. Electioneering, partisan political statements, commercial messages, and images promoting specific religions are not appropriate. The artist retains copyright but must license rights to the IAA during display. The IAA will promote the installed artwork and facilitate sales at the artist's option, taking no percentage on sales. Proposals must include 3-20 images. Deadline: February 3, 2014 at 5 p.m. MST.
