About This Call

Indiana University Health is building a new, world-class medical campus in downtown Indianapolis. The new campus will include multiple opportunities for public art, both interior and exterior, at a variety of scales. The art program is designed to feature national, regional, and local artists and will include a mix of curated and commissioned works to engage artists at different career levels.

For interior spaces, there are four primary artwork categories: Commissioned Artwork – Two-Dimensional (paintings, drawings, photography, prints, or mixed-media works that can be framed or displayed in cases); Commissioned Artwork – Wall Sculpture (dimensional artwork designed to be mounted directly to the wall or suspended flush with the wall surface, maximum depth of 4" during proposal phase); Prints & Photography (existing photography or giclées available for single-use licensing); and Available Artworks (currently available 2D or dimensional artwork available for purchase). Artists working in a range of mediums are encouraged to apply, including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, mixed-media, glass, ceramic, metal, wood, textiles, digital, or light-based works. The maximum depth of all artwork is 4" off the wall, including framing. For healthcare settings, cleanability is essential—glass/plexiglass or a protective layer is required for porous materials, and sculptural pieces must be able to be dusted thoroughly and cleaned with germicide. In general, 2D pieces will need to be a minimum 60"x30" or an arrangement of pieces covering that footprint. Artwork locations range from 10'L x 10'H walls to 22'L x 34'H walls, primarily in high-traffic areas visible and accessible to visitors, patients, and staff. More detailed location and scale information will be provided during the RFP process.

Artwork should align with four Guiding Principles: Art and Light (transforming environments through healing and innovation, utilizing natural light and creating lighted experiences); Foster Healing and Compassionate Settings (creating environments that support physical and emotional well-being); Reflect Community, Compassion, and Kindness (reflecting the needs of internal and external audiences and ensuring the campus feels welcoming and inclusive); and Embrace the Science of Art (integrating environmental and community elements with a focus on improving clinical and experience outcomes). Artwork may be representational, semi-abstract, or abstract while remaining appropriate for a healthcare setting. The Art Committee will select artists to advance to the RFP stage based on portfolio and application materials that demonstrate potential to engage the Guiding Principles, high-level technical skill and execution, and ability to create artwork that complements interior design and meets healthcare standards. Application deadline is September 14, 2025. Questions about the RFQ must be submitted by August 15, 2025, with written responses provided August 22, 2025.
