About This Call

The Indiana Department of Administration (IDOA) is seeking artists to create two site-specific sculptures for the new Bicentennial Plaza, located west of the Indiana State House in downtown Indianapolis. The plaza commemorates the 200th anniversary of Indiana's statehood and will serve as a lasting legacy and gathering space for citizens and visitors.

Two sculptures are being commissioned with budgets of $150,000-$500,000 USD per sculpture. The sculptures will be placed north and south of a central fountain, reflecting the themes of "Enduring Flame" (north sculpture) and "Living Time Capsule" (south sculpture). Each sculpture site measures 40 feet by 70 feet on hardscape. The plaza is scheduled for completion October 1, 2016, and the sculptures will be accessible 24 hours a day to the public.

Eligibility is open to practicing professional artists over 18 living in the U.S. and working with durable materials. Preference will be given to artists with a relationship to Indiana (born, lived, worked, or attended school there). The artist budget must cover research, design, materials, fabrication, transportation, shipping, installation, structural engineering, insurance, travel (except finalist site visit), project documentation, taxes, and contingency costs. All applicants must consider long-term conservation and maintenance, and finalists' proposals will be reviewed by an engineer for conformity with maintenance, durability, and ADA standards. Stamped documents from an Indiana-licensed structural engineer are required prior to fabrication. Up to three finalists per project will be selected based on merit of past work, relevance of approach, quality of materials, feasibility, and demonstrated ability to meet the project deadline. The application deadline is July 13, 2015 at 11:59 p.m. EST.
