Independence for Whom?

As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary of independence, the Women's Caucus for Art invites all women-identified artists in the United States to submit work addressing the question: Independence for whom? The exhibition seeks work that amplifies narratives around Freedom and Equity, Resilience and Resistance, and Voices of the Marginalized—exploring what independence truly means and whose voices have been suppressed or marginalized throughout history.

Approximately 50 works will be featured in a juried exhibition from June 20 to August 8, 2026, at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA, a historic venue once used as a suffragist prison and now a vibrant arts space. An opening reception will be held July 11, 2026, from 6–8pm ET. The exhibition will be juried by Shanna Aberle, Janathel Shaw, Debra Wright, and Carter Wynne.

Eligibility is open to all women-identified artists in the United States. Submissions must include an artist statement (up to 200 words), dimensions, media description, and up to three digital images (1080px–3600px on longest side at 72dpi). Video submissions in SD 720p or HD 1080p MPEG-4 format are also accepted. Entry fee is $40 for non-members and $26 for WCA members. All entries must be received by 11:59 pm EST on January 31, 2026. The Workhouse Arts Center will retain a 30% commission on each sale. Entry fees are non-refundable.
