In the Round: 2nd Biennial Outdoor Sculpture Competition

The Department of Art and Art History at the University of North Carolina Asheville invites artists to submit work for In the Round: 2nd Biennial Outdoor Sculpture Competition. Seven works will be selected by juror Twylene Moyer (editor of Sculpture magazine) and displayed for two years around the newly renovated Owen Hall on the UNC Asheville campus. An opening reception and virtual juror's walk will be held on October 18th, 2024. The exhibition runs from October 2024 through September 2026.

Artists may submit up to five entries at $20 per entry, with 1-3 images per entry. Eligible artists must be 18 years or older and currently residing in the United States. Work must be original, never previously exhibited at UNC Asheville, and able to withstand adverse weather and public interaction. Sculptures must not exceed a 10' x 10' footprint or weigh more than 3000 lbs, and must be able to be secured to a concrete pad and remain maintenance-free for the duration of the exhibition. Models and proposals for uncompleted work will not be accepted.

A total of $3000 in cash prizes will be awarded by the juror. Each accepted artist will receive a $1500 stipend to offset shipping and travel costs. UNC Asheville will provide installation assistance with heavy equipment (front loader, trackhoe, backhoe); additional equipment needs are the artist's responsibility. Artwork will be insured while on campus; artists are responsible for insurance during transit. A full-color catalogue will be printed, with each exhibiting artist receiving three complimentary copies. Sales are encouraged with a 30% commission retained by UNC Asheville. Installation dates are late September/early October 2024, with deinstallation in late September 2026. Artists unable to meet these dates are not eligible and may forfeit the stipend.
