In Black and White: Art Meets Writing

In Black & White: Art Meets Writing is an exhibition that partners artists and writers for a unique collaborative project. Artists are encouraged to submit work in any media, but pieces must be produced using black and white only. Accepted artwork will be paired with a writer who will create a short writing piece (500 words or less) inspired by the artwork. All accepted artwork and paired writing will be included in a physical exhibition, online exhibit, and print catalogue.

Artist eligibility is open to all working artists over the age of 18. Work must be created in the last 2 years. Maximum width for 2D or wall work may not exceed 5 feet in any direction. 3D work must fit through a standard door frame when assembled and must be free standing on floor or pedestal. Work must not exceed 50 lbs. Artists may submit up to 3 entries for $25 (SAA Members and Students with ID receive a $5 discount). Submit 1-6 images per entry, with up to 2 images per artwork (1 full view and 1 detail or alternative view). Each artwork must include an artist statement specific to the piece.

Artist/Writer Notification is June 15, 2018. Artwork drop-off is Friday, July 27 from 1-7 PM or Saturday, July 28 from NOON-5 PM at the SAA Collective gallery. The exhibition runs August 3-30, 2018, with an opening reception Friday, August 3 from 5-7 PM. Artwork pick-up is Friday, August 31 from 1-7 PM or Saturday, September 1 from NOON-5 PM. Awards include First Place $200, Second Place $100, and Third Place $50 for both artists and writers, with possible Honorable Mention Juror Awards. Award winners will be announced at the Opening Reception. The Springfield Art Association will retain a 35% commission on all artwork sales directly attributed to the exhibition. All participating artists and writers will receive a complimentary copy of the exhibition catalogue.
