About This Call

As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, Hawaiʻi Craftsmen invites applications for immersive master classes led by internationally renowned artist Magdalene Odundo, OBE, during a residency in October 2017. Two 5-day experiential master classes will be held on Oahu and Hawaii Island, with a maximum of 12 selected participants per class. Ms. Odundo will share her creative process of finding and translating inspiration from everyday experiences and conceptual thoughts into individual and collaborative abstract works across multiple media. Two free public wet clay demonstrations will be held at the Honolulu Museum of Art School on October 2, 2017, and at Volcano Arts Center on October 9, 2017.

Artists of all media and experience levels are encouraged to apply. The master classes emphasize developing new ideas and concepts while expanding artistic practices in an experiential, informal setting. Participants will engage in demonstrations, slide presentations, field excursions to cultural and geographic sites, sketching exercises, life drawing sessions, shared studio time with clay and drawing media, and discussions about fine craft perspectives. Participants will reside at shared accommodations provided by Hawaiʻi Craftsmen for the duration of each 5-day session.

Two master classes are offered: "Cultural Crossroads and the Urban Environment" (October 2-6, 2017, University of Hawaii-Manoa, Honolulu) focusing on cross-cultural influences in Hawaii's artistic heritage, and "Nature and Geographies" (October 10-14, 2017, Volcano Art Center, Volcano) focusing on inspiration from Hawaii's natural environment and volcanic setting. Participants are expected to engage in critical discourse, share knowledge about Hawaii's unique cultural and geographic setting, and develop a portfolio of new artworks reflecting their immersive experience. Selected new works will be featured in an exhibition in 2018.

Applications must be submitted via CaFE's online system during July 1-31, 2017. Required materials include a 3-page artist statement, digital portfolio of no more than 20 images of 10 original artworks created within the past 5 years, resume or CV, and non-refundable application fee ($15 for non-members, $5 for Hawaiʻi Craftsmen members). Selection will be based on artistic merit, creative ability, potential to benefit from Ms. Odundo's guidance, ability to engage in critical discourse, and potential for working well in an intensive group environment. Contact Barbara Thompson ([email protected]), Christopher Edwards ([email protected]), or Evan Jenkins ([email protected]) for application assistance.
