About This Call

The City of Inglewood seeks to commission a site- and time-specific public art project in conjunction with the 2020 Dr. Martin Luther King community celebration. Distinguished local curators and public art experts nominated artists for this invitation-only opportunity. One artist will be selected to create a public art work reflecting the community and Dr. King's values to debut on Saturday, January 18, 2020. This will be the first time the City commissions public art for the event. The commission contract is valued at $15,000.

The City is seeking a unique public art experience. Final projects may include temporary public art events with pre-event training or workshops for adults, children, youth or all ages; an art exhibition, music, dance or spoken word performances; artists' books, broadsides, print or digital projects readily accessible to the public. The project must result in an experience appealing to all ages and be realized within the specified budget and timeframe. Permanent artworks are not being sought.

The selected artist will work with Public Art staff to realize the project in conjunction with the City's Dr. King Day celebration in the downtown Market Street District. The project must be realized in or around the 4 blocks of Market Street. Permits, booth fees, and rental costs are the responsibility of the artist and should be reflected in the budget. Business licensing and general liability insurance will be required of the selected artist. Depending on the project, other insurance coverages may be required. Work sample requirements: 2-6 images, 0-2 audio files, 0-2 video files, 2-8 total samples.
