About This Call

ICONIC: Black Panther is a multi-city fine art exhibition celebrating the iconic role of the Black Panther Party in American history over the past 50 years. The Oakland exhibition will be held at American Steel Studios, 1960 Mandela Parkway, Oakland CA 94607, from October 7 to November 6, 2016. The curated exhibit will feature primarily local artists along with internationally renowned artists and original art from founding Black Panthers. A diverse group of artists will be accepted and encouraged to explore their own insights into the Black Panther Party and current societal challenges, including racial, cultural, class, and gender-based issues.

Accepted media includes painting, drawing, mixed media, photography, sculpture (limited space), and original prints. Each artist will have approximately 3'x4' of vertical wall space; sculpture and larger works must be cleared by curators. Entry fee is $15.00 for three slides and $5.00 per additional slide (4 slides maximum). The exhibition is open to artists in Oakland, California, and surrounding states, with priority given to in-state artists. Artists are responsible for pickup and delivery of their work. Each accepted artist will be featured in a fully illustrated catalogue. Accepted works must arrive display-ready by October 2, 2016 at 3 P.M. All sales will be handled through SEPIA in partnership with East Oakland Youth Development Center. Artists retain 50% of sales; remaining proceeds support political prisoners, Panthers in need, and their families. All pieces must remain up for the duration of the exhibition.

Deadline for submissions is August 19, 2016. Accepted artists will be notified by August 31, 2016. A headshot and 300 dpi scan of artwork are required by September 30, 2016. Jurors include Danny Simmons, Mat Gleason, and Isabel Rojas-Williams.
