About This Call
HUB-BUB is an artist-in-residence program hosted by the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg, SC designed to provide time and space for emerging artists to live free and create. Two residencies will be offered to studio artists for 11 months, from September 2019 to July 2020. Artists will receive a monthly stipend of $850 (paid on the 5th of each month), studio space, and housing with utilities paid. The program is open to artists nationally who have received a relevant degree (BA, BFA, MA, MFA, or PhD with some emphasis on studio art) within the last 5 years or are scheduled to complete their degree in spring 2019.
Housing will be provided in an unfurnished apartment in downtown Spartanburg (City View apartments, approximately ¾ mile from the Chapman Cultural Center) with all utilities, including internet, included. Studio space of approximately 300 square feet will be provided at the Chapman Cultural Center. The studio is shared space and attached to the HUB-BUB offices. Due to space limitations and the public nature of the program, specialty equipment and hazardous materials are prohibited. Studio access is available 8:00 AM–9:00 PM Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–9:00 PM Saturday, and 9:00 AM–5:00 PM Sunday.
Resident artists are expected to hold regularly scheduled open studio hours for 15 hours each week and commit 15–20 hours weekly to community engagement and organizational activities. This includes attending regular staff meetings, participating in Chapman Cultural Center and community events (monthly art walks, festivals, board meetings), and occasionally contributing to offsite events, workshops, or talks at partnering institutions. The application fee is $45.00. Work samples should include a minimum of 5 and maximum of 20 images, with optional audio (up to 6 files) and video (up to 6 files).
