About This Call

Houston Arts Alliance Civic Art + Design Program and Houston Airport System are seeking proposals from a select group of professional Texas artists for an interior public art commission at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). This is an invitational request for qualifications for a significant indoor commission.

Eligibility is limited to practicing, professional artists residing in Texas who have been invited to submit qualifications. The project seeks a visionary artist or artist team to create a signature landmark artwork at a location to be determined in the interior of the airport. The artwork should clearly identify Houston, Texas and will serve as a major addition to the airport's public art collection. Works should be highly durable and require minimal maintenance. Purchase of an existing work, with involvement by the artist for siting and lighting, will be considered. The project budget is $400,000, including design fee, engineering, site preparation, materials, and studio administration.

Three finalists will be selected and brought to Houston to view sites inside the airport and meet with Houston Airport System officials and the selection committee. Finalists will propose an interior location and orientation for their work and provide a rendering. Each artist or team will receive an all-inclusive fee of $3,500 for proposal and presentation development, plus all travel costs. The artist or artist team will be contracted by January 31, 2009, with groundbreaking anticipated in September 2009 and project completion by December 2009. Deadline for submission of qualifications is Monday, December 1, 2008. Applications are submitted through CaFE (www.callforentry.org). Contact Piper Huddleston at [email protected] or 713.527.9330, ext. 124 for further information.
